RESIDENTIAL LIFE & HOUSING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the living communities on the campus of Texas Southern University? There are five (5) living communities available at TSU. Residence Halls- Lanier East for men and Lanier West for women,The Academic Village, Tierwester Oaks, University Courtyard, and Savoy
What are the fees to reserve housing? It is a $350.00 to complete the housing reservation for Residence Hall and The Academic Village.
What other forms must I submit to have a completed housing application? All students must submit updated meningitis records (within one-year to date) to the Health Center in order to live in TSU sponsored housing.
Is a meal plan required for all students living in TSU sponsored housing? Yes, all students are required to participate in one of the 5 meal plan. Freshmen living in university sponsored housing are required to select either than 19 meal plan or 14 meal plans. If a plan is not selected then the 14-meal plan will be chosen on your behalf. Meal plans are optional for students in Savoy, Rosewood, and Palms.
Do you assist with roommate selection? Yes, a roommate profile is included with the housing application to match students with roommates.
When can I officially move into my residence hall/apartment? The official date to move into the residence hall is communicated to you along with your room confirmation information in the Housing Status letter.
What is the cost of each room type in Housing? Log on to www.tsu.edu; “Click on” Quick links and then “Click On” Housing on the web page: you will find the Housing and Meal Plan Information on the Residential Community Page.
How big are the rooms in my residence hall/apartment? Room types vary from building to building. Review the sample floor plans in this view book to get an idea of what a typical room size in the residence hall you choose.
How big are the beds in the rooms? Beds at Texas Southern University are regular or extra long twin sized beds.
Where can I do my laundry? Each residential community has laundry facilities on property for your convenience.
Can I bring my car as a freshman or transfer student? Yes, there is a fee for a parking decal. Please review the parking page on the Housing page on the school website under the section of Residential Services. All cars parked in the neighborhood will be ticketed and towed at owner’s expense.
Should I bring a computer? It is up to you, the university has many computer labs and each bedroom is equipped with Ethernet and/or wireless systems for internet usage.
Can I have overnight guests? Yes, but approval must be given by the Quality Control Manager.
Is there a visitation policy in the residence halls? In order to promote and maintain a positive, supportive, living and learning environment, the Residence hall staff will enforce limited visitation hours. Visitations hours for the Residence Halls are established by the Office of Residential Life are intended for academic and healthy socializing. Visitation is not designed for overnight cohabitation. During certain times visitation is suspended, (i.e. Thanksgiving, Final Examinations, and Spring Break).
Can I bring a microwave and refrigerator? All of the apartment’s styles living residence halls are equipped with a refrigerator and microwave. Smaller personal units are permitted in all residence halls.
What amenities are available in my residence hall/apartment? Each residence hall is equipped with such amenities as high speed internet access, cable, computer labs, vending machines, laundry facilities, and lounge areas.
What can I bring/ what items are prohibited? Students will receive information concerning what that need to bring and what is not allowed in Residence Hall with their confirmation letter in the official Student Handbook.
What safety precautions are taken in the halls? The Public Safety office hold seminars and advises the student body on various travel precautions to take while on campus and in the city.
Statements regarding security are not intended to cause undue alarm. It is known that criminal activity in our society is prevalent. Large cities are especially vulnerable. The suggestions made are only those for which the student would need to exercise as a member of any community. Residence Halls and Apartment Communities are equipped with the necessary safety and security hardware. All front doors are kept locked and each student is issued a Texas Southern University Tiger 1 Card which activates the front door in their respective building. Room door keys are issued to each resident. All residents must present a valid Tiger Card upon entry to the hall at all times or when asked by a University official.
Will TSU take responsibility for burglary or thefts in the residential community? No, it is recommended that all students acquire rental insurance for all personal property of value.
Is there a student governing body in the residential community? Yes, Residence Hall House Council. There are eight (8) position elected within the residential community. You will learn more about the duties of these positions in your residential orientations.
What are the rules in the residential community? All university students are governed by the University Student Code of Conduct. In addition, the Residential life and Housing Student Handbook will serve as the official rules, policies and procedures in the residential community.
