About Chief Information Officer


Prior to becoming Chief Information Officer for Texas Southern in September 2014, Mr. Villarreal served the University for the last 7 years as the Chief Information Officer for Ellucian managing the University ERP system and associated software. He has over 22 years of experience in the field of Information Technology both in the private and public sectors. He has over 18 years of experience working in higher education in executive leadership positions including 5 years as a faculty member in the Alamo Community College System. He is a graduate of Trinity University in his hometown of San Antonio and holds two Masters Degrees from Yale University in New Haven Connecticut.

Mr. Villarreal’s priority as CIO is to establish a high-credibility department with superior customer service, strong strategic leadership and operational standards that mirror the best practices of industry. He expects 3 qualities from his staff: competency, work ethic and integrity. Without the third quality, according to Mr. Villarreal, the first 2 qualities are moot.
