The Honorable Juan Antonio Sorto (Houston, TX)
Student Regent Juan Antonio Sorto is currently working on his PhD studying Urban Planning. He was born in Dallas, Texas and raised in San Miguel, El Salvador and Houston, Texas. In 2003, Mr. Sorto graduated from the Aldine Independent School District’s MacArthur Senior High School and was recruited to attend the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD). During his tenure at UHD, he became a member of Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society. In 2007, he received a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, graduating Cum Laude.
Mr. Sorto was recruited in 2009 by Texas Southern University’s (TSU) Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs into the Master of Public Administration program. At TSU, he became a member of the Hispanic Student Association, an organization he served as Vice president and through which he was appointed to serve as Graduate Class Senator in the Student Government Association (SGA). In 2011, he became SGA’s Vice President of Internal Affairs under the Dennis Administration and was awarded United States Congressional Recognition for his commitment and dedication serving the needs of student body at TSU. Mr. Sorto founded and presided over TSU’s Pi Alpha Alpha Public Administration Honor Society Chapter and became a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. In 2012, Mr. Sorto received his Master’s Degree in Public Administration.
Mr. Sorto enjoys giving back to the community by volunteering with the Star of Hope women and Family Shelter, serving meals and working on projects that benefit the underprivileged. He also spends his time speaking at various high schools about the importance of receiving an education.
He currently works at Harris County Community Supervision and Corrections Department, where in 2009 he received the Service Above & Beyond Requirements Award for his excellent team and leadership skills and became an active member of the Texas Probation Association. Student Regent Juan Antonio Sorto is now pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy in Urban Planning form the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University.
