TSU's Teaching and Learning Excellence Center
The Texas Southern University Teaching and Learning Excellence Center is available to all teaching personnel at the university.
The primary function of the Teaching and Learning Excellence Center (TLEC) is to promote a culture of excellence in teaching and learning. The TLEC offers a series of programmatic offerings designed to assist both junior and senior faculty as well as graduate teaching assistants, adjuncts, and visiting professors in improving the ways in which they deliver new knowledge to 21st Century learners. The TLEC serves to foster faculty development, to promote research-based methods of effective instruction, and to enhance systemic reform and change in teaching practices. The TLEC offers faculty development grants for hosting national conferences on teaching, for workshops on teaching effectiveness, for design of curricula, for development of examination questions, for research on the scholarship of teaching, and for travel to conferences to present research on best teaching practices. The center also offers a mentoring program that trains faculty to become effective student advisors and counselors. The TLEC serves as an umbrella under which several of the directors of the university’s initiatives involving strengthening the freshman learning experience (the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), the Urban Academic Village (UAV), and the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program) come together to discuss current trends in pedagogy and work to implement effective teaching across disciplines not just for freshman but for students of every level of matriculation.
