Kermit Oliver
Ollington Smith

A graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, TN, Smith began his teaching career at Morgan State University, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II before joining the faculty at Texas Southern (then called Houston College for Negroes).
While on faculty at TSU, Smith served as chairman of the English Department and was the first chairman of the Department of Speech and Drama. A specialist in World Literature, Smith was a noted theater director who established the Department of Theatre, the Texas Southern University Players, and the Little Theater.
In later years, the University named the Ollington Smith Playhouse in his honor.
