The Honorable Derrick M. Mitchell (Houston, Texas)
Regent Derrick M. Mitchell was appointed to the Texas Southern University Board of Regents in 2015 by Governor Greg Abbott and voted Chairman the same year.
Regent Mitchell is a partner in the Corporate Finance section of the law firm of Holland & Knight LLP in Houston. He serves on the firm's Political Action Committee and heads the Public Finance practice in Texas. Regent Mitchell currently serves on the Board of Directors for several agencies, including the Gulf Coast Rail District, Scenic Houston and Greater Houston Partnership Local Relations Committee. He was appointed by former Governor Rick Perry to serve on the Board of Directors for the Texas State Securities Board from 2009 to 2015.
Regent Mitchell’s membership with 100 Black Men of Houston, United Way - Alexis de Tocqueville Society, and being a Board Member of Pro-Vision, Inc., affords him the opportunity to support positive change in the community in which he lives and in the lives of others.
Regent Mitchell and his wife are the proud parents to one son. He is active in his church, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
A native of Amarillo, Texas, Regent Mitchell received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance degree from the University of Houston in 1996 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Houston Law Center in 1999.
