The Honorable Joseph R. Johnson (Sugar Land, Texas)
Student Regent Joseph R. Johnson was born in Southwest Houston and raised in Sugar Land, Texas. He graduated from Dulles High School in 2016 where he was a decorated policy debater earning Superior Distinction honors in the National Speech and Debate Association. He attributes much of his desire to make a positive impact on society to his experiences as a debater where he learned to think critically, speak with confidence and competence, advocate for what is just, learn from failure, and most importantly, the values of listening and tolerance.
Regent Johnson joined the Tiger family in the fall of 2018 as a transfer student from the University of Houston. He is currently a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in Public Affairs. Regent Johnson is grateful for all the opportunities and overwhelming support he’s received since entering Texas Southern.
As Regent, he would like to give back to the university through service and providing the resources necessary to produce more leaders much like he feels Texas Southern has done for him.
Regent Johnson wants to establish more mentorship programs involving students of all ages, civic engagement organizations, and professionals to ensure that students have tangible support networks.
Regent Johnson currently serves as the President of the Political Science Club where he was elected by his peers in the fall of 2019 and serves as the interim President of the Public Affairs Club. He is also a founding member and first President of the Rotaract Club of Houston Innovation Corridor. This program is for students and young professionals to develop leadership skills to impact their community through service.
Post-graduation, Regent Johnson plans to obtain his law degree from the University of Chicago. Upon attaining his law degree, he plans to return to Houston to serve the TSU community during his political career.
