Professional Biography

The beginning narrative of my career began as a junior high school Industrial Arts teacher in Cleveland Public Schools. After completing the M. ED program, I was selected as the middle school assistant principal until the Ford Fellowship was granted from the Ohio State University in the doctoral program. In 1974, the PhD enabled me to join Dr. Francis Chase, the “father of Educational Administration” at the University of Chicago. He invited me to join the Study of Instruction as a Fellow who would conduct the investigation and contribute to the final study in the Dallas Independent School District.

As I was hired as an Assistant Commissioner at the Texas Education Agency (1985) to provide leadership for all reporting Directors. After two years, I was promoted to the Deputy Commissioner for the Agency and the State Presidents for all Statewide Director of Careers and Technical Education.

Dr. Cummings was the President of State Directors, who led Vocational, Technical and Education for responsible leaders who relied on the Carl D. Perkins Law that extended the leadership throughout the United States.

My current position is Tenured Professor in the College of Education and Foundation since 2001, focusing on doctoral students. Prior to the current faculty position, I served as the Dean, College of Education and Foundations from 2001 to 2002. All evaluations were excellent until a new president decided to insert another faculty member to serve as the new Dean.

In addition to AdvancED, Cummings was a Board member for ten years, two years as board President and collaborations with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
