Governor Abbott Appoints Former Mr. Texas Southern University Taylor Getwood as New Student Regent

tgetwood-photoTexas Governor Greg Abbott has appointed eight student regents to their respective universities, including Texas Southern University. Taylor Getwood of Port Arthur, who is pursuing an Executive Master of Public Administration, was appointed for a term effective June 1, 2024, through May 31, 2025.

Getwood served as Tex the Tiger, the University’s revered mascot. He was also a residential assistant, and a founding member of Brothers United – an organization dedicated to male development. In 2022, he was crowned the 21st Mr. Texas Southern University. His platform, Commitment to Commencement, focused on motivating, empowering, and providing resources for students to commit to graduation. He continued to soar for TSU by representing the University on a national stage. He made history as the first Mr. TSU to win Mr. HBCU.

In addition to his service to TSU, Getwood serves his hometown as a member of the Port Arthur Independent School District Board of Trustees. At just 18 years old, he became the youngest trustee in the district’s history. 

He earned his B.A. in Communications with a concentration in Radio, Television, and Film.
