Texas Southern University welcomed the AfroTech Conference for its first year in Houston with the TSUxAfroTech Networking Exchange – an exclusive gathering of TSU students, alumni, industry leaders, and tech innovators from the AfroTech Conference.
The event, held at The Grove at Discovery Green on the eve of the conference’s first day, was an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and celebrate Black excellence in technology.
“The TSUxAfroTech Networking Exchange provided a dynamic platform to engage with industry experts, share insights, and inspire the next wave of innovators who are on an educational journey that is preparing them for careers in the industries represented during the AfroTech Conference,” said Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Engagement. “As Houston’s HBCU and one of the largest HBCUs in the nation, we are proud to welcome AfroTech to Houston. Texas Southern is on a remarkable journey. We look forward to bringing new and returning partners along the journey with us.”
The opening mixer was part of a series of AfroTech Conference-related events happening throughout the week. Blavity, the parent-company of AfroTech, provided complimentary conference registration for 25 TSU students. Additionally, pharmaceutical leader Eli Lilly, provided complimentary registration for 100 students. InternXL held its AI Pitch Competition on campus Tuesday evening.
"Our engagement with the industry leaders who are in Houston for AfroTech is part of something much bigger at Texas Southern,” said Board of Regents Chairman Brandon L. Simmons. “Our Board and president are aligned that education should be focused on preparing our students to flourish in the thriving Texas economy. Many of the state and nation's largest employers are visiting Houston this week. These employers are hiring, and we applaud President Crawford's focus on ensuring our students have opportunities in the economy of the future."
TSU students will also participate in “Heist House,” a two-day experience during which leaders in film, music, television, and branding will share valuable insights with creators about monetization. This event is presented by the Heist Agency.
