Message from the Dean

Welcome to the School of Communication at Texas Southern University, one of the largest HBCUs with one of the biggest and most comprehensive communication schools among the HBCUs.

The School is based in Houston, Texas, the third largest and most multicultural city in the United States of America. Known as the energy capital of the United States, Houston has a booming economy with increasingly diversifying energy, tech, and creative sectors. The vibrant nature of this international city contributes to a unique learning experience and success, “Excellence in Achievement” recorded by the School and the University at large.

The School of Communication (SOC) offers undergraduate majors in four (4) academic disciplines: Communication Studies (COMM), Entertainment and the Recording Industry Management (ERIM), Journalism (JOUR), Radio, Television, and Film (RTF). The Graduate Program offers an MA in Professional Communication and Digital Media and an MA in Communication Studies.  

The School of Communication is committed to preparing students for careers in communication, film, entertainment/recording industry management, plus specializations in journalism and electronic media using state-of-the-art digital facilities to provide an excellent education for an urban diversified student population. The school prepares graduates for competitive employment or professional pursuits as professionals and leaders in local, national, and international communities. 

The School of Communication aspires to be known for its high quality of education in communication, film, entertainment/recording management, plus specializations in journalism and electronic media training exemplified by skills instilled in the graduates and the importance placed on modern media convergence. The school wishes to become a renowned regional, national, and international student-managed digital multimedia center for producing and disseminating news and public affairs content using high-tech media and information technology. 

The School of Communication is home to a modern TV production studio, a top-rated community radio station, KTSU (The Choice), and KTSU-2, a student-run radio, TSU student media The VIBE, Podcast studio, SOC News Room, Music, and Audio Recording Center.  The facilities’ creative ecosystem enables professional staff, faculty, and students to develop their skills in writing, speaking, artist management, and multimedia content creation in the fast-changing world of digital technology.  

Students who enroll in our programs are in the right place because our classes are taught by nationally known, award-winning filmmakers, writers, and journalists. Our faculty and students produce award-winning content in every media and platform, and our alumni include Emmy, WorldFest,  and Canadian Film Festival winners.
