Dreams begin at Texas Southern University.

Since 1947, the primary focus of Texas Southern University (TSU) has been to offer the goal and reward of a college education to deserving students. Long recognized as "an institution of opportunity and access," TSU has provided countless students of all races the chance to realize their dreams. Today, TSU continues to open the doors of educational opportunity for over 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students from across the country and the world; and exceptional and highly dedicated professors prepare them to make dramatic differences in the quality of life for the people and communities they touch.

Our undergraduate and graduate populations comprise students of many nationalities and from various social, economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. Likewise, our faculty is reflective of TSU's global student body, offering a universally rich environment for developing young minds. Though the University remains one of the nation's largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities, our promise and dedication to "Excellence in Achievement" extends our academic sphere to include broader segments of the world's varied populations.

Goals are achieved at Texas Southern University.

Designated by the state legislature as a "special purpose institution of higher education for urban programming," Texas Southern University is a cornerstone of the Houston community and a recognized institution for educational success in preparation for leadership in urban settings. Texas Southern University delivers a top-notch education through baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degree programs in eight different schools and colleges. TSU offers the only Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology in Texas, along with three other doctoral degrees in education, pharmacy, and law. Additionally, in an on-going commitment to the community, the University has eight outreach centers that serve as major resources for addressing urban issues, including the Center on the Family, the Economic Development Center, and the Center for Aging and Intergenerational Wellness.

Our urban mission is far-reaching, from the services we provide to the educational experience we offer. The University has added several new academic programs, one of which is a Master's degree in Health Care Administration, and established the School of Public Affairs to meet the global demands of the 21st century.

Graduates of Texas Southern University achieve local, regional, and national recognition for service in all spheres of professional life, from former United States Congress members Barbara Jordan and George "Mickey" Leland and gospel artist Yolanda Adams to New York Giants star Michael Strahan and jazz sensation Kirk Whalum. Producing the largest number of minority graduates in Texas, the third largest number of African-American law graduates in the nation, and the second largest number of Mexican-American law graduates in Texas, TSU has graduated almost one-third of the African American pharmacists nationwide and approximately 40% of the teachers in the Houston Independent School District (HISD).

The future is promising at Texas Southern University.

The University is positioned to make an indelible mark on society in the future as it has in the past. TSU has embarked on a $50 million fund-raising campaign that will further enhance the quality of service we provide to our many constituents. The funds raised from our Open Doors campaign will go toward existing facilities renovation and new building construction projects, student financial aid and scholarships, campus beautification initiatives, and technological infrastructure upgrades. Strong community support for meeting our higher education commitment is evident with volunteer involvement from community leaders such as former U.S. President George H. W. Bush, who serves as Honorary Chairman of the campaign.

TSU is undertaking new construction, building expansion, and renovations campus wide. For example, the recent construction of the Student Recreation Center and renovations made to our dormitories have created a more student-friendly learning environment. Moreover, the improvements we are making to our technological infrastructure ensure that a state-of-the-art computing network system delivers reliable, quality service to our students. Our information technology initiatives will enhance students' academic training and overall educational experience.
