about the department
The mission of the Department of Music is to educate students through activities culminating in the creation, performance and promotion of music. This is achieved through curricular offerings designed to produce performers, educators, composers and music industry professionals.
The Texas Southern University Music Department is a professional, accessible and reliable educational unit that presents creative, innovative and exciting performances and educational opportunities of the highest quality. We offer coursework that develops students in their chosen areas of specialization including performance (vocal, piano, instrumental and jazz), composition and teacher certification. In creating, performing and promoting music, the Department involves, serves, educates and enriches the TSU community and residents throughout the region; and particularly, provides music students opportunities to develop their skills as performers and teachers. Students are provided with a strong undergraduate education upon which to base the pursuit of advanced or graduate study. Faculty members in the Department are committed to providing an educational environment where aspiring performing artists and teachers develop in the understanding and mastering of creative techniques. Our students have the opportunity to gain an appreciation of the cultural, historical and educational values of the arts; and this cultural awareness translates to the community which the university serves.
The TSU Department of Music comprises seven academic & performance divisions: Piano, String, Voice/Opera, Wind & Percussion, Music Education/Teacher Certification, Theory & Composition, and Jazz Studies
The Department offers the BA Degree in Music spanning Theory and Composition, Performance (Piano, Strings, Voice/Opera, Wind & Percussion, Jazz studies) and Music Education/Teacher Certification.
