Dr. Poon is a Professor in the Pharmacy Practice Department (COPHS) and Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. She has been teaching clinically at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center for fifteen years and established a strong collaborative research relationship at the VA IQUEST center, where she was initially mentored, with the NIH Center of Excellence in Health Disparity Research faculty fellowship award (2005-06). Dr. Poon has received multiple grants in community engagement (PCORI grant award, DHHS, CMS) projects for the minority elderly population. In collaboration with the TSU Center on the Family, she has ten years of community engagement experience with Houston's urban communities. She is an active volunteer/speaker in the Aging Mastery Program (senior community group) at the TSU Center on the Family. In 2019, she hosted the first community town hall meeting at Emancipation Park to engage seniors from a predominantly Black community in the proposal planning through the Pipeline to Proposal PCORI funding. Dr. Poon is passionate about geriatric pharmacotherapy, minority health, community engagement, and junior faculty mentorship.
Dr. Poon is responsible for overseeing the administration of all components of the IDC Program. Specifically, she will take the leadership role in assembling proposal review committees, working with reviewers to evaluate pilot projects, and working with IDC participants, ADC and Advisory Committee (AC) to assess the IDC program's overall effectiveness implement recommendations.
