Wazobia African Market Commits $10,000 Annually to Support TSU School of Communication Students

Fund invests in the next generation of journalists, broadcasters, and digital media leaders

HOUSTON, TX

Wazobia African Market has announced the establishment of a $10,000 Annual Scholarship Fund for the School of Communication (SOC) at Texas Southern University (TSU), reinforcing its commitment to education, community empowerment, and the advancement of minority voices in media and communication.

The annual scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to deserving undergraduate and graduate students within the School of Communication, helping to reduce financial barriers while encouraging academic excellence in journalism, public relations, digital media, and broadcast communication. The initiative aligns with Wazobia African Market’s mission to invest in sustainable opportunities that uplift underserved communities across the Greater Houston Area.

During a presentation ceremony on campus, Wazobia African Market officially handed over the check for the 2026 scholarship awards. The check was received on behalf of the School of Communication by Dr. Chris Ulasi and Dr. Ogbo, faculty members of the school, who expressed appreciation for the company’s continued support of student success and professional development.

Speaking at the event, Wazobia African Market Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Tunde Fasina, emphasized the transformative power of education and storytelling.

“This scholarship goes beyond financial support,” Fasina said. “It is about investing in voices that will shape narratives, influence public opinion, and represent communities that have historically been marginalized. Texas Southern University has a proven legacy of producing outstanding communicators, and we are proud to support students who will define the future of media.”

The School of Communication, led by Dean Dr. Alam Caldwell, is one of Texas Southern University’s flagship academic units. Founded in 1975, SOC is a transformational and interdisciplinary academic hub offering four undergraduate departments and two graduate programs. As one of the oldest communication programs at a historically Black college or university (HBCU) in the United States — and the first of its kind in Houston — SOC has long been recognized for excellence, innovation, and inclusivity.

Over the decades, the School of Communication has played a critical role in shaping Houston’s media landscape by fostering representation for African Americans and underserved communities. Its influence extends beyond the classroom, driving policy conversations, encouraging ethical journalism, and inspiring multicultural storytelling. Many SOC alumni have gone on to work with local and national media organizations, contributing to industry growth while advancing diversity and positive change.

Receiving the scholarship on behalf of the school, Dr. Chris Ulasi described the fund as a meaningful investment in student potential. “This support will allow our students to focus more fully on their education and creative development,” he said. Dr. Ogbo added that partnerships with community-based organizations like Wazobia African Market strengthen the school’s mission and expand opportunities for students.

Wazobia African Market is a Houston-based company serving African, Caribbean, and international communities with authentic African groceries, specialty products, and prepared foods. What began as a vision to provide West African families with familiar ingredients has grown into a grocery store, restaurant, and cultural hub that offers comfort and connection.

Reflecting on the company’s origins, Fasina said, “I wanted to create a place where Black people could feel at home — where they see familiar products, and experience that sense of belonging.”

Through initiatives such as the TSU School of Communication Scholarship Fund, Wazobia African Market continues to merge cultural pride with social responsibility, investing in education while supporting the next generation of media professionals.

Additional information on the application process and timeline will be communicated to eligible students as soon as it becomes available.
