Honors Scholarships

The Thomas F. Freeman Honors College has limited scholarships. However, the College works in partnership with other colleges/schools at the University to offer competitive scholarships and financial packages (including a review of the student’s eligibility for restricted and unrestricted Honors College scholarships, funds from private philanthropic organizations, out-of-state waivers, Pell Grants, Texas Grants, General University Scholarships, and loans) to entering high school freshmen who are admitted into the Honors College.

The student must first apply to the University for acceptance. Students must also complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and list the Texas Southern University (TSU) school code (003642) so that the report can be sent directly to TSU. Once a student is admitted to Texas Southern University (TSU), the Honors College staff will work closely with the student from start to finish to ensure outstanding guidance throughout the process. The following is a guide used in the awarding of Honors scholarships, once a FAFSA has been completed and submitted to TSU. The Office of Financial Assistance will post awards for which students are eligible. A student may receive a Department/College or School scholarship that partners with the Honors College in awarding scholarships.

Thomas F. Freeman Honors College Scholarship Levels For First-Time Freshmen should read as follows:

Level I: Amount: $14,000 per year, $7,000 per semester (4 years)

High school GPA of 4.0 +  

Level II: Amount: Up to $10,000 per year, $5,000 per semester (4 Years)

High school GPA of 3.81 to 3.9; 

Level III: Amount: $9,000 per year, $4,500 per semester (4 Years)

High school GPA of 3.50 to 3.80

The student's packet will be received with a holistic approach. While a student's academic performance is very important, we also view evidence of community service, interest in learning about diversity, and very important, we also view evidence of community service, interest in learning about diversity, and recommendation letters from teachers as key indicators of a student's future success at a four-year academic institution.

Requirements to Remain in Good Standing in the Honors College:

Students must maintain both a semester and cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 to remain a member of the Thomas F. Freeman Honors College. If a first-time freshman drops below a 3.25 GPA but has a GPA that allows for a mathematical chance of raising the GPA to 3.25 the next semester, the student will be allowed to remain in the Honors College.

All students must participate fully in the Honors College Program.
