It is with heavy hearts that Texas Southern University (TSU) mourns the passing of Sylvester Turner, a devoted advocate for our community, a fierce champion for public service, and a steadfast supporter of TSU. Turner, who served as the 62nd Mayor of Houston, made lasting contributions to both the city and the state of Texas, leaving behind a profound legacy of leadership and advocacy.
A proud native of Acres Homes, Turner’s distinguished career spanned multiple decades. In addition to his service as mayor, Turner was a dedicated member of the Texas House of Representatives and represented Texas' 18th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. His commitment to public service, particularly his advocacy for those who were underserved, earned him the respect and admiration of countless Houstonians.
His connection to Texas Southern University was deep and unwavering. Turner’s support for TSU was evident in everything he did, from his personal commitment to the university’s growth to his role as the Commencement Speaker at TSU’s Fall 2022 ceremony. Through his leadership and dedication, Turner made it clear that he believed in the potential of every TSU student and in the vital role the university plays in the Houston community.
Brandon L. Simmons, Chairman of the TSU Board of Regents, shared his sentiments:
"I came to know The Honorable Sylvester Turner through our dear mutual friend TSU Regent Stephanie Nellons Paige," Simmons said. "We shared colorful stories of our family histories and brainstormed together about how to take Texas Southern University to new heights. I knew him as a leader who cared deeply about all Houstonians. Whenever I saw him, he encouraged and affirmed our work for TSU students. We last spoke at the swearing-in of TSU alum Judge Takasha Francis, which he was so proud to officiate. I send prayers and love to Ashley, Jimmy, and Jameson."
President James W. Crawford III also shared his thoughts:
“The loss of Mayor Sylvester Turner will be felt deeply across our university and our city. His leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of Texas Southern and the entire Houston municipality will never be forgotten. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable life.”
Sylvester Turner’s legacy of service, leadership, and advocacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the countless individuals he impacted. His commitment to a better future for Houston and Texas continues to serve as an inspiration to all who knew him.
Texas Southern University extends its deepest condolences to the Turner family, his friends, and the entire Houston community. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as we celebrate his remarkable life and honor the enduring impact he made.
