Our History

The band began in 1945 at Houston College for Negroes with 35 veterans and students under the direction of Conrad Johnson. In 1969, the name Ocean of Soul was given to the band and the movement began. That year, Mr. Benjamin J. Butler II became director and brought a bold new vision that transformed the group into a musical force.

From its first uniforms to its rise in national recognition, the Ocean of Soul has remained committed to excellence and performance. Today, it stands as one of the most respected and celebrated collegiate bands in the country.
