Counseling - College of Education
Our Purpose
The Department of Counseling at Texas Southern University prepares master’s and doctoral-level students to address the unique challenges of urban and non-urban communities. Through comprehensive training in counseling, education, and vocational guidance, the department equips professionals with the skills to support culturally and linguistically diverse individuals.
With a focus on equity and inclusion, students engage in knowledge-based learning and hands-on internships in urban settings, ensuring they are ready to positively impact communities and drive meaningful change.
Programs Offered
The Department of Counseling at Texas Southern University offers a master’s degree with three specialized concentrations:
-
Clinical and Mental Health Counseling
-
School Counseling
-
Rehabilitation Counseling
Housed in the College of Education Building, the department provides advanced training, research opportunities, and hands-on learning to prepare students for careers in mental health, education, and rehabilitation services. The Department Office is located in Room 249 for additional guidance and support.
In summary, students are admitted after review by a departmental committee; and, once admitted, they are assigned an official advisor who should be consulted on a semester or term basis. Advisors guide students admitted to the Department through the admission process for the Counselor Education Program, as well as oversee their matriculation through the Program. Advisors also advise students with regard to their status for graduation. Additional information may be obtained from the Department Office at 713-313-7018.
