The Mickey Leland Legacy Contest
A campus-wide, 3‑track competition honoring the life and impact of The Honorable Mickey Leland through scholarship, creativity, and advocacy using Adobe Creative Campus tools.
Overview
In partnership with The Mickey Leland Center on Hunger, Poverty and World Peace and TSU Online, Texas Southern University invites students to participate in a campus‑wide contest that celebrates Mickey Leland’s legacy of public service. Submissions must be created with Adobe Creative Campus tools and will culminate in a public showcase.
Purpose. This contest invites students to explore Mickey Leland’s legacy while beginning to define their own. Each track provides a clear pathway for reflection, creativity, and advocacy, leading to a unique submission for the final showcase event. All projects are required to use resources from The Mickey Leland Archives and the videos on the Texas Archive of the Moving Image.

Choose from one of three tracks. Each provides a unique lens to continue Mickey Leland's legacy.
The Honorable Mickey Leland was a powerful advocate for public health, championing causes that addressed healthcare access, food security, and disease prevention for marginalized communities both at home and abroad. His tireless work was rooted in the belief that everyone deserves the right to health and dignity.
The Challenge: A Symposium on Health Equity
Submit a research poster, presentation slide deck, or creative advocacy piece that identifies a specific health disparity or public health issue affecting a vulnerable population. Design using Adobe Creative Campus tools. Propose a practical, innovative solution that aligns with the principles of pharmacy or health sciences.

Mickey Leland understood that art, words, and culture could spark movements and shift society’s values. This track invites students across the arts and humanities to channel their creativity into works that honor Leland’s legacy and serve as a modern call to action.
The Challenge: Creative Arts Showcase
Submit an original creative work—such as a video tribute, spoken‑word piece, song, poem, short story, or visual artwork—that connects Mickey Leland’s life and advocacy to a pressing issue today. All submissions must incorporate Adobe Creative Campus tools.

- How can your chosen art form highlight a modern‑day issue Leland would have championed?
- What emotions or ideas from Leland’s story can you capture through your work?
- In what ways can art catalyze social change on campus and beyond?
Mickey Leland used law and policy as tools for justice. This track challenges students in law and public affairs to transform policy research into clear, compelling public campaigns.
The Challenge: Advocacy in Action
Submit a creative advocacy campaign addressing an issue such as healthcare access, hunger, voting rights, or human rights. Design with Adobe Creative Campus tools.
Acceptable Submission Formats
- Social Media Campaign · 3–5 posts
- Infographic explaining a key policy or justice issue
- Poster Series or Flyer raising awareness of a social problem

Prizes & Recognition
Prizes are awarded in each track. Winners receive certificates and recognition at the campus‑wide showcase.

Eligibility & Requirements
- Who may submit: All current TSU students (undergraduate & graduate). Team entries (up to 4) are allowed.
- Adobe requirement: All submissions must be created using Adobe Creative Campus tools.
- Research requirement: All projects must use resources from The Mickey Leland Archives and the Texas Archive of the Moving Image.
- Originality: Work must be original and created for this contest. Include any necessary citations/credits in your submission.
- Accessibility: Provide captions/transcripts for audio/video; use legible type and high contrast for print/digital designs.

How to Submit
- Create your project using Adobe tools.
- Export your final file(s): PDF for posters/infographics; MP4 for video; high‑res PNG/JPG for images.
- Name files: LastName_FirstName_Track_Title.pdf (or .mp4/.png).
- Complete the entry form (contact info, track, 150‑word project abstract).
- Upload your files and click Submit. You will receive a confirmation email.
