Core Objectives


TSU Core Curriculum – Building Essential Academic & Life Skills

Each core curriculum course at Texas Southern University (TSU) integrates three to four key Core Objectives, ensuring students develop critical thinking, communication, empirical analysis, teamwork, social responsibility, and personal accountability. These foundational skills prepare students for academic success, career readiness, and civic engagement in a diverse and evolving world.

Each core curriculum course at Texas Southern University must include three or four of the following six Core Objectives:

  • Critical Thinking Skills (CT): Creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and the ability to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information.
  • Communication Skills (COM): Effective development, interpretation, and expression of ideas through written, oral, and visual communication.
  • Empirical and Quantitative Skills (EQS): Manipulation and analysis of numerical data or observable facts to draw informed conclusions.
  • Teamwork (TW): Ability to consider different viewpoints and work effectively with others towards a shared goal.
  • Social Responsibility (SR): Intercultural competence, civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.
  • Personal Responsibility (PR): Connecting choices, actions, and consequences to ethical decision-making.
