About Texas Southern University Choir


Founded in 1927, Texas Southern University (TSU) is one of the largest historically Black universities in the U.S., recognized for its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and leadership development. With over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs, TSU offers a diverse and dynamic learning environment, supported by a distinguished faculty and more than 80 student organizations.

TSU’s strong alumni network includes influential leaders in education, entrepreneurship, public service, law, aviation, and the arts, shaping industries worldwide. In Spring 2024, TSU welcomed its 14th president, J. W. Crawford III, ushering in a new era of leadership and growth. Originally established to educate African Americans, TSU now serves a global student community of over 8,900, fostering inclusivity and academic achievement.

The Texas Southern University Choir has a rich history of performances at prestigious institutions such as Yale, Howard, and the San Francisco Conservatory. Internationally acclaimed, the choir has toured Europe, captivating audiences in Holland, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy.

Renowned for its collaborations with major symphonies, including the Dallas Symphony and Houston Symphony, the TSU Choir has performed iconic works like Handel’s Messiah and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

Under the leadership of esteemed directors such as Thelma O. Bell and Kiana Williams, the TSU Choir continues to uphold a legacy of choral excellence, remaining a cornerstone of the university’s musical heritage.
