Equipment and Service Requests

Current Index to Legal Periodicals(CILP)
The Law Library subscribes to an online version of the University
of Washington’s Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP). This service provides a
weekly index to legal periodicals. You may receive CILP via e-mail. Click on CILP link to get more information.
SmartCILP
If you prefer a customized e-mail delivery of your choice of subjects and/or law review
tables of contents,
sign up for the weekly SmartCILP. This customized weekly CILP provides weekly email
notification of the articles recently indexed in the Current Index to Legal Periodicals
that concern topics selected by you. Patrina Epperson, our Circulation Librarian can assist you in preparing a personal profile and help
you get started with SmartCILP.
New Titles List
Each month you will receive the Law Library’s New Titles List. This alphabetical subject
listing includes all new items added to the library. This list will be delivered electronically
to your e-mail address. As a special service to faculty, the library will send you
any item on the list. You may print out the list, circle what you want to see, and
send it back to Karim Alridge-Rand, Technical Services Director.
In 2013 the Thurgood Marshall School of Law Library launched its Faculty Liaison Program. The purpose of the Faculty Liaison Program is to ensure a more regular and higher quality of service. The Faculty Liaison Program accomplishes these objectives by pairing each faculty member with a designated librarian, who is responsible for contacting them to assess their research needs at least once a semester.
The current Faculty Liaison Program Guide can be found here.

The Law Library staff members are available to provide tours of the facility to new and visiting faculty. During the tour, we will give you a general introduction to the arrangement of the collection, explain major Law Library policies, and provide guidance regarding the use of the catalogs.
In addition, the Law Library staff will provide tours of the library for classes. Please adhere to the following instructions for scheduling such tours:
- Faculty members should schedule library research sessions before sending students with class-wide legal research assignments.
- Contact the Reference Librarian at least three weeks in advance to allow adequate preparation and completion of the handouts.
- The faculty member should discuss any upcoming assignments with the Reference Librarian.
- Schedule a class tour of the library.
- The Librarian will plan a legal research classroom presentation geared specifically to the class assignment.
- The Librarian will locate and place library materials on the subject on reserve to provide control and ease in access.
- If necessary, the Librarian will prepare research guides or handouts on the resources and strategies that students will need to research in a particular area of law.
Classroom Presentations
Classroom presentations by librarians can be an important part of seminars or other
courses that you offer. Especially for students writing papers, a presentation on
major research tools--both print and online--and a discussion of research strategies
in the field can be a practical component of your course. Contact your Reference Librarian
to arrange for classroom presentations in upcoming courses.
Library Guide
A Law Library guide is available detailing services, hours, rules, and location.
Circulation of Law Library Materials
Law Library materials are checked out from and returned to the Circulation Desk. Faculty
may generally have regular library materials for six months and journals for one month.
Non-circulating or reserve materials may be checked out by special arrangement. While
there are no overdue fines charged to faculty for regular materials, all items are
subject to recall by other patrons, which will incur charges for late return.
Journals
Journals are housed in two places in the law library. Bound Journals are located in
the main stacks because all journals are classified. Recent unbound issues of most
journals are kept in a secure area of the library to maintain extra security. Feel
free to ask for assistance to find the journal issue you need.
Interlibrary Loan
The Law Library Online Catalog, accessible via your office PC, is a convenient resource for identifying holdings
in our library. For those occasions when you cannot find what you want in our library,
you should make a request to borrow needed material via Interlibrary Loan. We will
obtain books and photocopies of materials not held in our library upon request. Forms
for making such requests are available at the Circulation Desk.
Book Orders
The Law Library will do everything possible to anticipate your research and information
needs. If there is a title you would like to add to the library collection, please
do not hesitate to discuss this with any Librarian.
The Law Library is committed to providing quality and expeditious service to Law School Faculty. To this end, the Faculty Research Librarian is available for each faculty member. The Faculty Research Librarian will facilitate your use of databases, updating tools, and special services, etc. You are encouraged to contact the Faculty Research Librarian with any library questions, although you are welcome to deal directly with any library staff. Librarians can assist faculty with Interlibrary Loan requests.
Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) Exercises
The Law Library receives the complete set of online exercises produced by CALI. These
exercises provide a practical supplement to class presentation. You may contact your
Faculty Research Librarian for a current catalog of offerings. All exercises are available
via TWEN. For assistance contact the Faculty Research Librarian or the Associate Director.
WESTLAW and Lexis-Nexis
Faculty members can access these online services through their office desktop, home
computer or law library computer lab. You can browse results online; e-mail yourself
your results; download them to a disk or send prints to the dedicated high-speed printers
located in the Administrative Office. Both providers have academic representatives
that are available for hands on training. Individual passwords are available from
the Associate Director as soon as you arrive on campus. Your Faculty Research Librarian
will also be pleased to run any searches for you.
Internet
A wide variety of research materials are accessible on the Internet through the Law
School network. The Faculty Research Librarian can show you how to use the World Wide
Web to gain online access to reports, treaties, discussion lists, and much more.
The Reserve Collection is located behind the Circulation Desk. Included in that group of materials are heavy demand items, Faculty Course Reserve and Faculty Exams. The Faculty Course Reserve/Exams is a temporary Reserve Collection of items that professors have asked to be held at the Circulation Desk for student use. Students may borrow and use items within the library for a limited time. Faculty Reserve items are removed at the end of every semester and returned to the faculty member.
To place an item on Faculty Reserve:
- Complete the Reserve Request Form. (The forms are available at the bottom of this page)
- Return the completed form to Patrina Epperson , Circulation Librarian or Nanette Collins, our Reference Librarian.
- Bring the items to be placed on reserve. If the item is a photocopy, please make sure enough copies are being provided (1 copy per 15 students).
- Retain a copy of the item you are placing on reserve. Note: the library is not responsible for personal copies of materials placed on reserve.
- Obtain a reprint or permission to copy.
- It takes at least 8 hours to process a reserve request. Before announcing the availability of the reserve material, please verify with the Circulation Librarian that the material is available.
- Upon completion of the class, the item will be returned to you, unless otherwise instructed.
